Two Viking CD-ROMs are Rare Finds for Students and Archaeology Enthusiasts Posted by at 10:01:25 AM Fri 11/01/2002 East Dorset, VT. November 1, 2002- Dig deep to uncover Viking secrets, without leaving your computer! Two impressive software programs put the tools of the archaeologist and historian in your hands, so that you can unearth fascinating facts and artifacts from over a thousand years ago. Kiloran Bay: A Viking Pack and Vikings combine to bring a fascinating culture back to life for students and Viking enthusiasts. Using interactive investigations, archaeological reconstructions, timelines, and exhibitions of hundreds of artifacts, these software titles leave no stone unturned in their exploration of the Vikings.
Kiloran Bay: A Viking Pack
Travel to Kiloran Bay in the Inner Hebrides to examine the longboat burial of a Viking man. Amazing animations and audio clips take you to the archaeological site, and reenact the burial. Learn about the daily lives and religious beliefs of the Vikings as you carry out interactive investigations. There are five areas to explore in the uncovered longboat. Each of these areas allows students to answer the following questions about the Viking man: How was he buried? Was he a warrior? Was he a trader? Was he rich? Why bury these objects? Click on a shield, arrow, and axe to learn about the weapons used by warriors. Look closely at metalwork weights that were traded by Vikings. Examine thousand-year-old copper coins. Find out why Viking men were buried with a "power symbol" and learn what those symbols might be. Click on objects buried with the Viking, such as knives, a bridle, and a horse, to learn more about their place in Viking culture. In one activity, you can test your knowledge of Viking burial by dragging various objects into chests representing daily objects, power symbols, transport objects, and food.
Kiloran Bay: A Viking Pack is a wonderful introduction to archaeology and Viking culture for students in elementary and middle school. Teachers will love the extensive teacher's notes that accompany and enrich each section of the program. These notes can be printed out and used to connect the software to classroom activities.
Vikings
Produced in conjunction with the world-renowned Jorvic Center in York, England, this CD-ROM includes over 500 photographs, videos, and drawings of Viking artifacts, buildings, boats, people, and more. You can even hear voice samples of the Vikings as they tell you about their lives. The program's interactive interface invites you to explore a timeline of Viking history, and then click on a coin to travel back in time to 950 A.D. You can enter Viking homes, and hear from people with names like Erik, Gamall, and Orm about what it was like to be a slave, a trader, a warrior, a woman, or a child in Viking times. Study the architecture of a longhouse and explore the site of a Viking church. Then come back to the present and visit the Site Office, where you work with three experts: an historian, an archaeologist, and a scientist. You'll learn, for example, about digging, sieving, recording, using coins for dating, and other techniques of the archaeologist.
Students of any age will love checking out the massive "Finds Database" in which hundreds of archaeological and historic finds are displayed. High-quality photographs of items such as beads, brooches, scabbards, combs, shoes, walking sticks, sculptures, grave covers, rune stones, and crosses are just a few of the treasures you won't want to miss in this incredibly comprehensive program.
