Think of a database like a card catalog in the library. Each card contains information about a single book. Every book’s card contains the same categories of information such as “Book Title”, “Copyright Date”, “Author” and more. When those cards are sorted properly, it becomes much easier to find books in the library.
When building a database, each of those categories is called a “field”, and each of those cards is called a “record”. When records are sorted in a database, it becomes very easy to find information. It is even possible to search for a single piece of information inside any field, and then locate all the records that match.
PARTS OF A DATABASE
Professional databases contain all of these parts:

Bank – The bank is a clip art library. It contains random words, pictures, video and sounds.
Browse Data – This is the process of looking at information in a database.
Data – Data is a single piece of information. For example: “Brown” is a piece of data that describes a dog.
Data Entry – This is the process of putting information into a database.
Database - A database is a tool used to collect large amounts of information, sort data, search for specific information, and analyze information by making charts, graphs, and comparisons.
Field – This is the entry box for a single piece of information inside a database. The computer allows for many different types of fields. Fields can be text boxes, drop down menus, check boxes, or radio button.
Layout – Each field is initially placed on the screen in a random location. Dragging each field to a unique location on the page is necessary to avoid overlapping fields. The “Layout” is the collective location and appearance of all the fields on the page. It’s the “look” of the database.
Record – One page in a database. Each record contains lots of fields where information is entered.
