  • Encyclopedia and/or web access
The class creates a database of the fifty states. Each student is responsible for 2-3 states. Fields in the database may include: date of founding, state flag, state bird, state flower, population, main industry, and colleges. Images can be collected from the internet.
    1) Open Tool Factory Database, click on "Change a Database," and open the "Fifty States Database."
    2) To see an example, click on the "View list" icon near the bottom on the left hand side of the screen. Scroll down through the list of states and double click on "Vermont." Students should look at this record to see what kind of information they should search for as they begin to research each state.
    3) Research may be done through the Internet and in books. Often, websites will have graphics that can be saved to the hard drive by right-clicking on them.
    4) You may want to divide your class into groups of two or three students to research each state. Each group will be responsible for completing the record of that state.
    5) If students would like to add or delete fields, they may do so in the add a field mode. They may change the layout, background, etc. in layout mode.
    6) Remind students to save their work often.
