SCIENCE AND SPORTS COLLIDE IN THIS CROSS-CURRICULAR SOFTWARE

East Dorset, VT. November 2, 2001 - No software program can give you a workout, but now there's a CD-ROM on the market that brings the science of sports into your classroom. Designed to inspire and inform middle and high school students about the inner workings of athletic activity, World of Sport Examined jumps over another hurdle in software technology and has sports enthusiasts of all ages excited. The CD-ROM offers a global perspective on the whole range of sports, and demonstrates the connections between human biology and sports performance in a way that takes full advantage of the cross-curricular approach to learning.

World of Sport Examined immediately draws you in with its visually stimulating multimedia screens. Take an audio-visual journey through all the body systems, and learn about topics like fast twitch muscles, the workings of the heart, nutrition, and the workings of the skeletal system with the aid of diagrams, animations, videos, and images. Then try out the Success in Sport module, where you can compete in three interactive games. Play Work Those Muscles in a virtual gym, and practice identifying prime mover muscles and their movements to make the on-screen humanoid complete his reps at ten different exercise machines. Design a training program for the sport of your choice, such as basketball, tennis, swimming, archery, cricket, or hockey. Go for the gold in the 110 meter hurtle race: each time you answer a question about the science of sport you clear one of the eight hurdles. Students will love finding themselves at the awards platform where the triumphant humanoid jumps for joy at their success!

When you use the on-screen controls to click around the program, the sound of a tennis racket striking a ball signals your movement to a new section of the CD-ROM. World of Sport Examined has a huge database of information, presented in a variety of multimedia formats, and you can access any topic from the Reference Manual, which allows you to browse through the seven chapters of the program and research specific topics. A Glossary is also available at all times, and will speak the selected word to the user. There's even a Web Link to the program's homepage, which contains links to a variety of relevant internet sites.

Teachers and students alike will love visiting the Revision Lab section of the program. Students go here to test their knowledge with multiple-choice tests and quizzes. In test mode, a record is kept of the questions attempted, and the lab will take students back to the pages of the program containing the information they need to correct any wrong answers. In quiz mode, students can compete at the Regional, National, or International level, and a running score is kept so that students can then proceed to the awards podium to receive their medals.

World of Sport Examined is an invigorating software program that can shape up any physical education curriculum, and it's also a stimulating new way to approach the study of sciences like biology, anatomy, and health in the classroom. Students will be thrilled to finally have a way to bring their favorite sports into the academic setting, and the new knowledge they'll gain about the science of sport will certainly foster a deeper understanding of what's going on when they take to the field, court, or track.
