STUNNING CROSS-CURRICULAR SOFTWARE EXPLORES THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN MATH, SCIENCE, ART, AND HISTORY.

East Dorset, VT. January 15, 2001 - What do Einstein, black holes, the I Ching, and magic squares have in common? They're all illuminated in a pair of exceptional CD-ROM's called Life, the Universe and Mathematics and Art and Mathematics. Mathematics, Art, History, and Science meet in the highly-acclaimed CD-ROMs, and teachers and students alike are thrilled to finally find software titles that reach into the fascinating realm of subjects such as Art History and Astronomy.

Life, the Universe, and Mathematics
Life, the Universe, and Mathematics is an interactive program that explores the "elegant geometrical laws" at work in the universe. The nine modules cover the following topics: Labyrinths and Knots, Comic Geometry, Epicycles, Celestial Mechanics, Topology, Complex Polygons, Cellular Automata, and Life. Each module contains a wide array of simulations and images. Some graphics are interactive, some are ray-traced, some are animated--all are spectacular. The drawings have been created using mathematical formulas, so students can finally see math coming to life in the form of artwork. Included with the program is a pair of 3D glasses that make the animations even more impressive. Illustrations of things like the Book of Kells and Salvador Dali paintings are of the highest quality, as are interactive diagrams of the Golden Rectangle and planetary orbits. Simulations let users change the code for one-dimensional life, construct magic squares, and play with the eccentricity of ellipses. Students will meet important figures such as Dante, Aristotle, Kepler, Newton, Einstein, Stephen Hawking, and Ed Witten as they move through the text by simply clicking an arrow at the bottom of the screen. The user clicks on any graphic to get an enlarged view, and to read further information about it. The "Print Text" button is great for research purposes, and students will soon be using this CD-ROM as a resource for all kinds of projects in their Math, History, Science, and Art classes.

Art and Mathematics
Art and Mathematics explores the influence of math on the visual arts with the same style of exquisite animations and illustrations. The author guarantees that this program will "stimulate even the most jaded of math students" and it's easy to have faith in that promise. The nine modules in this CD-ROM explore: Spiritual Geometry, Knots and Links, Magic Squares, Regular Polyhedra, Perspective, The Divine Proportion, The Ambassadors, New Geometries, and Fractal Geometry. The printable pages of text introduce a host of artists, mathematicians, and even poets. Art and Mathematics gives you a virtual tour through the works of artists ranging from Albrecht Durer, William Blake, and Raphael, to the more modern M.C. Escher. You'll learn about the Father of Algebra, Al-Khowarizmi, discover 3 point perspective, and learn how to construct a torus knot.

Both Life, the Universe, and Mathematics and Art and Mathematics are appropriate for high school study and higher learning.
