CUTTING-EDGE SOFTWARE LETS YOU EXAMINE EVERY BONE IN THE HUMAN BODY

East Dorset, VT.  December 4, 2002- Now you can navigate the world’s most complete 3D skeleton from your computer.  The award-winning software program Interactive Skeleton, created with cutting-edge technology, makes learning about the musculo-skeletal system a lively enterprise.  High school and medical school students alike will enjoy finding their way around the bones of the human body by clicking on easy-to-use navigation controls.  Hundreds of study notes, clinical notes, and professor’s tips accompany each impressive image.  There is even a Spanish edition of the program.

An entire skeleton was scanned using a Computerized Tomography scanner at University College London, and with the resulting images, a 3D model was constructed and incorporated into this software.  To explore the skeleton, users simply select which area they would like to examine first, then click on any bone or muscle attachment to read its label, as well as descriptions of its location, function, common injuries, and more.  Interactive Skeleton has been linked to new curriculum drawn up by the American Association of Clinical Anatomists, and provides expert information about anatomical features.  Click on the blue question mark to hear a clinical question posing a hypothetical problem that may affect a patient.  Read about “Maxillary sinusitis” and tibia fractures.  Examine three x-ray images of a simple right tibial break in a 21 year-old man.

Zoom in to get a closer view, or click the blue arrows to scrutinize an image from any angle.  Select various parts of the skull, for example, to read about the occipital bone, parietal bone, temporal bone, ethmoid bone, sphenoid bone, and maxilla.  What is exactly is the “soft spot” on an infant’s head?  The clinical notes will explain.  In addition to the highest quality imagery and text, Interactive Skeleton includes many sound clips, dissection images, and radiographs to elucidate anatomical structures.

The program also includes a customizable quiz module that lets you choose from three levels of difficulty, select the region of the skeleton you would like to focus on, and set the number of questions and question type.  The skull wearing a graduation cap lets you know right away whether you’ve answered correctly, and if you haven’t, gives you more chances.    It’s easy to spend hours honing up on your knowledge of anatomy or studying for exams with this software. And it’s easy to see why Interactive Skeleton won the International Media in Science 1st Prize and the British Medical Association Electronic Product Gold Award.  Software programs like this one are rare specimens.
