MAJOR RELIGIONS OF THE
WORLD ARE EXPLORED THROUGH EDUCATIONAL SOFTWARE

|
|
East Dorset, VT. September
27, 2001. In classrooms across America, students today are asking
new kinds of questions about the role of religion in their lives. The
study of religion, which has frequently been avoided in the classroom,
is now surfacing as a vital component of current affairs. Two powerful
educational tools that can help foster understanding are Aspects
of Religions and Exploring World Religions, a pair of CD-ROMs
that give a thoroughly unbiased look at the major belief systems of
the world.

Aspects of Religion
"Religion is probably the
most important influence on the lives of everyone in the world… it affects
a great many aspects of our everyday lives, wherever we live." So begins
the narrated introduction of Aspects of Religion, a CD-ROM for
high school students and adults that explores 8 different religions.
Students can explore topics such as war and peace, crime and punishment,
prejudice, lifestyle, and the sanctity of life. Pick a contemporary
issue and then see how it is addressed in Judaism, Islam, Sikhism, Shinto,
Confucianism, Hinduism, Christianity, or Buddhism.

"War and Peace" and Islam to read about the rules for Jihad. Select "Abortion"
and Christianity to learn the Christian church's views on the subject.
As you research each issue, you can click on "Quote" to read any quotes
from holy writings or leaders on the matter. "Personal Views" lets you
see, hear, and read the views of another student on the selected topic.
The "Compare" function allows users to select two pieces of text or pictures
from a particular subject or religion, and then view them together on
the same screen. You can even take a 3D tour of the places of worship
for each religion. |

Exploring World Religions
This program tailors similar
information for the upper elementary and middle school grade levels.
Use the keys to enter rooms in which the places of worship and pilgrimage,
the holy writings, special days, people, and beliefs are examined. Meet
children from each faith, and listen as they give you a tour of their
lives, including their schooling, diet, rituals, and holidays. Meet
Muhammad and learn how he prays five times a day, taking ten to fifteen
minutes each time.

Did you know that the Buddhist
Diamond Sutra is the oldest printed book in existence, and is over 5
meters long? The longest epic poem in the world is called the Hindu
Mahabharata and contains 100,000 verses. Can you match these places
of worship: Mandir, Church, Temple, Mosque, Gurdwara, Shrine, to their
respective religions? Students will encounter many words they aren't
familiar with, such as prashad, quiblah, mandala, wuzu, and sutra. Such
words are highlighted in blue, and when they are clicked with the mouse,
a definition appears. Learn about Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur during
this holiday season for people of the Jewish faith. Go to the timeline
to review the history of each religion.

| Aspects
of Religion and Exploring World Religion give students and
teachers a closer look at many religions they may know little or nothing
about, guiding them to greater tolerance and even appreciation for different
belief systems. The exciting multimedia format with over 1,000 photographs,
maps, illustrations, and pages of text, as well as many personal interviews,
present vitally important information in a modern format guaranteed to
engage any learner. |
