BBC Science simulations Brings Science Experiments to life on the Computer

Sunderland, VT, September 8, 2006 – Tool Factory introduces a revolutionary new line of science software for elementary students.  BBC Science Simulations allows students to conduct real life science experiments on the computer screen.  Grow plants, build electric circuits, or explore friction. Manipulate the variables on each experiment, then watch the simulation come to life through colorful computer animation!   Each activity poses scientific questions to prompt student experimentation.  BBC Science Simulations also introduces students to the basics of data collection and graphing as each experiment is performed.  Get the complete 3-CD series or buy the individual components, which vary in ability levels as well as number of variable for students to manipulate.

Simulations include:

· Exercise and Health - Select the exercise type, and fitness level to view the effect on breathing rate and energy level.
· Plants and Growth - Manipulate the levels of water, light and wind to observe how the plant grows over a 30-day period.
  · Food Chains - Select the starting numbers of pondweed, small creatures and fish within the pond and observe the changes to the animal and plant populations over a 15-week period.
· Changing Materials - Heat and cool a variety of common materials to observe the changes that occur.
· Using Electricity/Circuits and Conductors - Explore making and changing simple electrical circuits by dragging items such as wires, batteries, bulbs, and motors onto predefined positions. If the circuit is complete, it will work!
· Forces and Movement/Friction - Select the force and surface type, launch the metal disc and observe how far it travels.
· Light and Dark - Explore how light affects what we see by dragging a variety of objects and light sources onto a stage area and experimenting with different combinations.

· Sun and Shadows - Select one of three objects and explore how the length of a shadow cast by the sun changes over the course of a day. Investigate how the time of year affects the length of the shadows.

In BBC Science Simulations 2 and 3, data can be viewed in “Muti-Sim” mode, allowing students to view the growth in data charts, graphs, and the animated simulation all at the same time.  Once click on the camera icon will capture the current state of the experiment. Then students can print, copy or save screen caps of the simulation before, during, or after the simulation. These can be used later for writing formal lab reports.

Teacher controls allow specific experiments to be turned on/off, allowing focus on selected subjects for each student.  Interactive white board settings bring the controls to the bottom so that students can reach the program’s controls on a larger screen.  The teacher controls provide suggestions for additional lesson plans to accompany the software simulations.
