Keynote Speaker

Heather Chirtea is the president and founder of Tool Factory, a Vermont-based educational software publishing company specializing in technology for the inclusive classroom. After studying the education markets overseas, Ms. Chirtea found that technology integration in foreign classrooms can be as much as 5 years ahead of American schools. She began Tool Factory as a vehicle to bring more advanced software to the US.

As an accomplished lecturer, she travels widely throughout the United States and conducts over 400 lively seminars on technology integration each year. One of her passions is assisting educators in overcoming the hurdles of using technology in the classroom. She’s a firm believer in project-based learning and has designed more than 20 hands-on seminars across all subject areas.

She co-authored two books including the Digital Camera Guide for Educators and The Simple Guide to Podcasting. She can be frequently found sharing hard-won knowledge on the effective usage of digital technology in the class. Heather’s primary mission is to “Make a difference in American Education” and to that end, she’s set up a $50,000 annual grant together with Olympus to provide digital cameras, software tools, and resources for teachers and students.

When she’s not traveling, Heather manages software development with a focus on internet-based software for educators. She’s launched online services for clip art, classroom worksheets, lesson plans, and formative testing and assessment. A recent research study registered test score improvements of up to 15% in mathematics in the state of Maryland, using the assessment system that Heather designed. With a degree in communications and operational statistics, she has written over 5,000 test questions correlated to mathematics standards.

As a mother of twins, and firm believer in the education system, she strongly supports the public school where her twins attend. She’s won grants, raised money, and recently completed a “community playground build” for the local town.

Get ready to explore some of the most amazing technology innovations for education. After this entertaining romp, you’ll remember why you got into technology in the first place! We’ll connect a standard microphone to the computer and use our speaking voices to control the movement of game characters. Use vocabulary, pitch, and tone to build puzzles, shoot the space invaders, and blow up a balloon. We’ll continue by using the same microphone to build a podcast. The audience will contribute to a theatrical script and watch as we bring a dramatic scene to life in minutes. Then using a standard digital camera, we’ll turn on the super-macro feature, and take an extreme close-up of insects. You’ll be fascinated by images of bugs, flowers, and simple everyday objects projected to 8 feet high in vivid detail. Then switch the camera to panorama mode and shoot a series of 10 photographs in a 360° circuit. Transfer the images to the computer and stitch them together into one amazingly long image for your website.  Time permitting, we’ll show you how to photograph a clay-animated sequence, and assemble the photos into a looping cartoon. Prepare for a fast-paced surprise-filled learning adventure!  Each attendee receives a free copy of MultiMedia Lab V (worth $99), plus a subscription to Elementary Zone.
